ESDA urges Safety during Holidays

Iroquois County ESDA is joining the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) and the Office of the State Fire Marshall in suggesting preparedness and safety gifts for friends and loved ones this holiday season. Weather radios, emergency kits, smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are gifts that can save lives. “After the severe winter storms we had last year and all the flooding, I think people are more aware of the importance of being prepared for the unexpected,” said IMEA Director Andrew Velasquez III. “Being without heat and electricity during frigid weather isn’t just an inconvenience, it can be extremely dangerous if you’re not adequately prepared. I believe a preparedness gift, like a weather radio, flashlight, car emergency kit, would be greatly appreciated during the holiday season.”

Velasquez said Illinois has experienced several weather disasters that demonstrate the importance of personal preparedness. Individuals, goverments and businesses need to test, practice and educate the importance of preparedness. Local emergency offices can help direct preparedness plans.
