— April 14th Weather Spotters Training —

Weather Spotters School in Crescent City

The National Weather Service (NWS) in cooperation with Iroquois County Emergency Services and Disaster Agency (ESDA) will conduct a weather spotters school in Crescent City Tuesday, April 14, 2009. The public is invited to the 6:30 pm event at the Crescent City Grade School gymnasium.

The classroom instruction by a meteorologist from the National Weather Service at Romeoville will include videos of severe weather and a power point presentation. Participants will learn to identify microbursts, hail systems and cloud formations that often lead to tornadoes.

The primary mission of the NWS is to save lives and protect property by issuing warnings for hazardous weather. Doppler Weather Radar serves as a great tool for detecting and tracking potentially severe storms. However, meteorologists also depend on real-time reports from trained spotters to know exactly what’s occurring on the ground under a storm. The NWS trains people to identify severe weather and report through organized communications networks, primarily local and county emergency management, law enforcement and amateur ham radio.

The NWS encourages spotters to be retrained at least every two years.
