Swine Flu Update: Ford-Iroquois Public Health

Watseka, IL – Local officials have been notified by Dr. Daman T. Arnold, Illinois Department of Public Health Director of nine probable cases of the Corbett, local Public Health Administrator. According to Corbett, there are five probable cases in Cook County, one in DuPage County, two in Kane County and one in Lake County.

“Our goals during this public health emergency are to quickly identify cases of swine flu and reduce the spread and severity of the illness,” said Corbett. “The Governor’s proclamation is not cause for alarm but simply allows us to be proactive and distribute medicines and medical supplies from the state and federal stockpiles to hospitals and local health departments across the state so they are available when and if they are needed.”

“Influenza is thought to spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing from an infected person,” said Cathy McEwen, Acting Director of Nurses for the health department. “The Ready Illinois website says, CLEAN- wash your hands, COVER – Cover your cough and sneeze, and CONTAIN – Contain your germs – stay at home if you are sick. This is really the best advice for our residents to protect themselves from any disease,” said McEwen.

Health officials are reminding those who have traveled to any of the areas where cases have been identified and who have flu like symptoms to contact their medical provider prior to going to their health facility. “We want to contain this,” said Corbett. “The only way to do this is to isolate those infected from others. Your doctor’s office needs to know that you are coming in prior to your going there so probable cases can be handled away from other patients. Please help us help you by following these instructions.”
