HEAT ADVISORY EXTENDED, BE CAUTIOUS

Heat advisory extended through Saturday, heat index could hit 110

A heat advisory has been extended through Saturday in East Central Illinois. The National Weather Service says temperatures in the 90s, combined with very high relative humidity, will produce heat index temperatures from 105 to 110 degrees in the afternoon and evening through Saturday. The weather service originally had said the heat advisory was through Thursday, then extended it to Friday and, on Thursday afternoon, extended the advisory through Saturday.

The weather service also says that as the heat wave lingers, its effects will worse, meaning more danger of heat exhaustion or heat stroke for those spending time outdoors, especially if they are working hard or very active at play. The heat is worse in cities, which trap the heat for longer times. The heat is especially dangerous for children, the elderly and those with medical conditions, the weather service says.

Leaving a child or pet in an enclosed vehicle, even for a short time, can be deadly. The weather service advises people to stay out of the sun, stay in air-conditioned spaces, drink plenty of water and check up on friends and neighbors. The weather service says a front should move through the area on Saturday evening, bringing a break from the heat and humidity.
